2/4 Sight

Innovative Ricardo combustion system offers potential for 27% fuel consumption reduction through aggressive engine downsizing enabled by 2-stroke switching.

Results of engine testing and simulation

  • Up to 27% benefit in fuel consumption and CO2
  • Compliance with EURO 5/6 emissions standards
  • Reduced CO2 emissions from downsizing with higher specific load
  • CO2 emissions comparable to diesel engines at similar or lower cost
  • Class leading torque delivery

Next steps

Building on the work of the 2/4SIGHT engine concept, the 2/4CAR project will deliver a global premium vehicle demonstrating a 25-30 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions with no loss of performance using an innovative, highly-downsized gasoline engine with two-stroke/four-stroke switching technology.

Integrated studies

  • Concept and detailed design analysis
  • 1-D gas dynamics simulation
  • 3-D computational fluid dynamics
  • Vehicle control and system simulation

Proof-of-concept prototype engine design based upon 2.0 litre, V6, direct-injection gasoline engine delivering performance and driveability associated with a 3-4 litre V8.
