Mark's Story
“"The experience remains one of the most challenging I have faced in my career"”
Story
I joined in 2006 as a Project Manager and Team Leader for the rolling stock engineering team.
During this time I worked primarily on large-scale design and engineering projects for new freight wagons, including a new 40ft ‘Ecofret’ Container Flat Wagon, and modifications to coal wagons for conversion to carrying biomass haulage, an assignment that involved the design, procurement and testing of an innovative pneumatic top door solution to prevent water ingress.
I subsequently took on the role of Project Manager and Resident Engineer on a complex project working with our team in the Netherlands for the ETCS retrofit of DE6400 and Class 66 locomotives for operation on the ERTMS Level 2 equipped Betuwe Route.
I also supported the retrofit of the Class 66 prototype ETCS Onboard equipment based at Reuschling, Hattingen in Germany. The experience remains one of the most challenging I have faced in my career with plenty of lessons learned – it was an extremely complex long-term project with significant commercial and contractual pressures involving many stakeholders and interfaces, operating across lots of cultural boundaries.
In 2010 I relocated with my wife to Copenhagen to act as Project Manager and Lead Assessor on the Banedanmark Signalling Programme G-ISA contract. We stayed in Denmark for over 6 years, with my role also encompassing that of Business Manager and a responsibility for growing the business, securing three long-term ISA contracts for the new light rail systems in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen.
Upon returning to the UK in 2016 I took the role of Certification Manager for the Ricardo Certification business. Through this role, I have managed and maintained Ricardo Certification’s global processes and worked with multiple National Accreditation Bodies to ensure that our global accreditations are maintained. This has enabled me to expand my internal network and to become involved in a number of high profile projects across our certification locations, from the UK to Denmark, Spain, the Middle East, China and Korea. More recently, I have also acted as interim Business Manager for our businesses in Madrid and in Denmark.
