Ottawa’s O-Train Systems Integration Support
Challenge
Ricardo is providing Systems Integration Verifier Services for the extension of the O-Train network in the Canadian capital, Ottawa.
As the programme involves major civils works - including bridges, underpasses and grade separations - as well as new rolling stock and train control technologies, expert support was sought to oversee the smooth integration of each system into the project.
Approach
As the System Integration Verifier, our experts are undertaking structured reviews of the risks and technical challenges ahead and prepare a detailed Management Plan to guide managers, contractors and suppliers through the build, installation and testing.
Typical risks in a project of this nature include: the compatibility of new vehicles with the original track infrastructure; the integration of new signalling with existing rolling stock; the impact of noise and exhaust emissions on adjacent communities; and resilience to a climate ranging from heavy ice to summer temperatures exceeding 30°C.
To ensure the smooth progression of the project, our team facilitates regular risk workshops with stakeholders to exchange updates and agree priorities, meanwhile regular progress reports offer early sight of emerging issues, allowing interventions to be made more cost-efficiently. Where required, Systems Integration Verifier Notices alert teams to deficiencies, non-conformances and other observations that our experts believe require attention.
Results
Once satisfied that all concerns have been addressed, with all outstanding Notices closed, we will be able to determine that, as an independent party, we believe all key systems have been successfully integrated, with quality and technical expectations met, and the system ready to apply for its permit to operate.
