Ricardo congratulates Shengrui on prestigious China Patent Gold Award
29 November 2011

Advanced technology 8-speed automatic transmission (8AT) developed in collaboration with Ricardo – one of just 15 of a total of almost 700 innovations, submitted by agencies including government ministries, local IP offices and trade associations, to be recognized with a Gold Award.

(L-R) Shengrui Chairman Liu Xiangwu, Professor Tenberge, Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans celebrate the first 8AT prototype at Ricardo in Feb 2010. Shengrui has now been recognized with a China Patent Gold Award for the 8ATFirst launched in 1999 and organized in Beijing jointly by China's State Intellectual Property Office and the World Intellectual Property Office, the China Patent Awards have been successfully held for 13 years as an important platform to promote IP development in China. These awards represent the pinnacle of achievement in terms of the development of indigenous IP by Chinese companies and are widely celebrated by the country’s industries.

The new front wheel drive 8AT transmission is the result of a highly successful collaboration between Ricardo and Shengrui. This advanced unit, derived from an initial patent owned by Shengrui, offers key advantages including a relatively simple arrangement utilizing standard component design and manufacturing techniques, providing excellent shift quality, a highly compact design package competitive with less well specified products, and flexibility for further adaptation for four-wheel drive,  integration with hybrid powertrain systems, and for a variety of torque capacities.

Ricardo and Shengrui signed a contract in June 2009 under which Ricardo became the development partner for this ‘industry-first’ product.  Following 2 phases of successful prototype design, control system development, manufacture, and testing by Ricardo, the 8AT has achieved good performance in environmental, durability and functional performance, and is now approaching mass production for a range of passenger car applications.

Commenting on the award of this China Patent Gold Award to Shengrui, Lee Sykes, Ricardo global product group director - driveline & transmission systems, said: “Ricardo congratulates Shengrui on a very well deserved accolade for this advanced technology transmission product. The 8AT transmission is a fantastic example of the manner in which Ricardo is able to assist Chinese manufacturers to develop world-class products based on their own IP and the very latest technology, thus enabling them to compete successfully in both Chinese and international markets. This is a further example of our commitment to provide engineering services, technology and strategic advice tailored to the requirements of our customers in all parts of the world.”
