World class air monitoring network for Riyadh to be provided by Ricardo-AEA
21 October 2014

Ricardo-AEA has been awarded a three year contract to provide city-wide air quality monitoring and data analysis for Saudi Arabia’s capital city, Riyadh – the work will provide a robust evidence base to help the ArRiyadh Development Authority make environmental improvements.

Ricardo-AEA is working in collaboration with air monitoring equipment supplier Envirozone LLC to develop a comprehensive air monitoring network consisting of 17 air monitoring stations across the city. This world class network will measure a wide range of different air pollutants and will make nearly 10 million discrete measurements throughout the duration of the contract. Ricardo-AEA will regularly monitor the network’s data, critically reviewing, interpreting and rapidly disseminating pollutant information. The information will enable the ArRiyadh Development Authority to understand how pollution is being formed in the city and take targeted steps to improve air quality.

To ensure that the project provides enduring benefits, Ricardo-AEA is delivering a comprehensive training programme to enhance the technical capabilities of the Authority’s air quality team, ensuring that they are equipped to manage the network effectively beyond the life of the contract.

“This contract represents a major progression of Ricardo-AEA’s business in Saudi Arabia,” commented Ricardo-AEA’s air quality & environment practice director Sean Christiansen. “Our team of air quality experts is delivering an authoritative evidence base that will support the city’s ambitions for environmental improvement.”

Ricardo-AEA has been at the forefront of air quality measurements and the associated quality assurance and control of data for more than five decades.  The methodologies and procedures it has developed are recognised internationally as representing best practice in the management of air quality data and as such have been introduced and adopted across the globe.
