Ricardo awarded locomotive engine design upgrade contract by China’s YCSR
14 April 2013

  • Major design upgrade of YCSR 240mm bore engine
  • Aim of achieving a significant increase in power and fuel efficiency
  • Emissions compliance to conform to international standards: UIC III/Euro Stage IIIA

YCSR is a joint venture between engine manufacturer Yuchai and rolling stock manufacturer CSR, which produces a range of high and medium speed diesel engines for use in the rail and other industrial sectors. The company has contracted Ricardo to assist in upgrading the design of its existing 240mm bore engine to provide internationally competitive levels of performance, fuel economy and emissions while keeping the expected durability for such type of applications. In addition to its current application in railway locomotives, the upgraded engine may also be used for marine and off-highway applications.  For this reason the emissions targets to be addressed by Ricardo will also include those applicable to these non-rail sectors. A further fundamental challenge of the programme is that it must be carried out to a tight schedule mandated by the china ministry of railways.

“This locomotive engine upgrade contract awarded by YCSR is a further demonstration of Ricardo’s growing presence both in the Chinese market and the international railway rolling stock sector,” commented Ricardo Asia president Gary Tan. This programme is to be carried out to an extremely tight timescale and to the latest international emissions regulations applicable across multiple sectors. It will also deliver an extremely fuel efficient product that serves YCSR’s ambitious development strategy. The project demonstrates Ricardo’s ability to provide its class-leading engine design and development capability, drawing upon the skills and resources of its global network of technical centres and facilities and delivering state-of-the-art products to very demanding timescales.”
