This webinar demonstrates the value in applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) within the automotive business particularly in powertrain development. In practice adoption of AI with Machine Learning (ML) methods for calibration has been relatively slow compared to other fields of automotive engineering (e.g. autonomous vehicles, driver aids). The models require a very high level of accuracy to be confident that the vehicle will meet the legislative requirements and the amount of data for a specific application is often not so large (in Big Data terms).

Optimising a complex control system is challenging and time consuming. The complex nature of the system often results in optimisers identifying a local solution and not a global solution. This time-consuming process results in sub-optimal system performance

In part 2 of the Ricardo Efficient Calibration webinar series, Alistair Peel, Chief Engineer - Calibration Solution Lead, and Farraen Mohd Azmin, Senior Project Engineer - Calibration Methodology, demonstrate how they go about complex controller optimisation and how their methodology can achieve a global solution by using machine learning techniques. Using Ricardo's Efficient Calibration toolset, they will introduce the two-stage optimisation method which combines Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) to reach a global minimum.

The application of artificial intelligence with machine learning to the calibration process can add significant value for an OEM particularly in powertrain development, helping to reduce product development time and cost whilst maximising efficiency and improving the quality of the finished product.
