Emma's Story
What is your role at Ricardo?
I lead the team delivering telephone emergency response and chemical and response training to over 650 companies globally. My team is made up predominantly of chemists, customer facing professionals and hazardous materials and response specialists.
What does your average day at Ricardo look like?
I am not sure I ever have an average day; my role means that I am involved in a wide variety of activities every single day mainly focused on the team and the service delivery for our customers. So, a typical day might involve a regular catch up with one of my team, followed by scoping a new customer offering, supporting the team resolve a query and then a discussion about how to further develop our service. The variation in the role is definitely what makes it so enjoyable.
What do you find most rewarding at work?/are you proud to work at Ricardo?
I am immensely proud to work at Ricardo, working with a team of people who all align to our vision ‘to create a safe and sustainable world’ and who genuinely want to make a difference.
How have you developed your career at Ricardo?
I have worked for the company for over 20 years and have always felt that the company supported my development, allowing me to learn and gain experience in managing people and projects. This support gave me the confidence to progress into the role I do today. Being able to ‘learn on the job’ and shadowing others has been hugely beneficial and is something that I encourage my own team to do.
What do you most enjoy about working with your team?
I manage a diverse team, ranging from graduate chemists to technical experts with 20 years’ experience. This mix provides a collaborative working environment, those early in their careers who are eager to learn and the more experienced who are keen to share their knowledge.
