Fiona Thompson
Fiona's Story
Fiona is a senior consultant with experience in the environmental sector, specialising in Extended Producer Responsibly (EPR), recyclability of packaging materials, and sustainability principles. Fiona closely works with clients in the Food and Drink sector, as well as FMCG/CPG brand owners. She brings her knowledge and insights of the packaging market to all the projects she works on, providing clients with confidence that their packaging choices follow sustainable circular economy principles.
Fiona is the packaging technical lead for all audits carried out on OPRL members’ packaging labelling to ensure the current labelling rules are being adhered to and support OPRL members to understand the recyclability of their packaging within the UK. Fiona has provided a sustainable packaging roadmap for a leading whisky producer to support them in achieving their ambitious packaging targets, such increasing recycled content, reducing single-use plastic, and ensuring product packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable. She has also recently conducted a feasibility study for reusable packaging for a beauty and skincare company, which helped the client to successfully implement a washing facility for their reusable packaging containers. The reusable packaging model used by the client has been successful in reducing their carbon footprint and helped to grow their customer base based on their sustainability credentials.
Fiona often conducts regulatory reviews for clients on EPR requirements around the world, as well as market assessments, and feasibility studies for various packaging materials and formats. She has an excellent record of conducting stakeholder engagement exercises to help clients understand the key issues and innovative solutions within the packaging value chain.
In her previous roles as a Packaging Compliance Manager, Fiona focused on waste packaging, WEEE and battery regulations across Europe. She has helped numerous companies meet their legal obligations on a global level. Fiona has a thorough understanding of international EPR data requirements, eco-modulation, and the systems needed to streamline the process of collecting and validating this information. She has worked with companies to understand their legal EPR obligations but also how this fits in with their wider ESG strategies.
