Clean Energy & Environmental Solutions (CE&ES), one of Ricardo plc’s five operating business units, is a leader in sustainability consultancy, solving complex environmental challenges through industry-leading analysis, advice, and data. Our Digital Modelling practice is one of seven practices within CE&ES, and is responsible for complex quantitative modelling across Europe and the world, with clients such as the European Commission, OECD, World Bank, National Governments, and private clients as well as a number of EU-funded research projects. We are looking at expanding our Economic Analysis team, and this position will play a key role in enabling this growth.
The Senior Researcher/Consultant is expected to also work with one of the team’s main tools, namely the GEM-E3 model which is a large scale sophisticated economic model designed to evaluate the effects of external shocks on the economy. The model has been employed in the last 30 years by international institutions (OECD, World Bank, European Commission, NGFS, IPCC) for the assessment of transition and physical climate risks. It is frequently peer-reviewed and its results are published in top ranked scientific journals and included in latest IPCC reports.
The role
We are looking for a Researcher/ Consultant in Climate and Energy economics to join our team of experienced researchers/modellers and engage with us in providing state-of-the-art insights with our large-scale economic tools. We look for a motivated and experienced researcher to further develop and apply our Computable General Equilibrium model and to participate in multiple research and consultancy projects for clients such as the European Commission, the World Bank, the OECD but also to contribute to peer-reviewed publications and research to be included in IPCC reports and more.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform quantitative research to support various activities of the Economic Analysis team and the GEM-E3 model application/development.
- To produce high quality, technically accurate analysis, assessment, reports, designs, or other documents in support of client projects within timescales and budgetary. requirements.
- Collect, structure, keep up-to-date and analyze large datasets with relevance for energy, economy and transport.
- To develop new tools/techniques to meet the needs of clients, identifying best practice from other markets or countries as required, and teaching new skills to others as appropriate.
- Apply the model in various research projects to provide support to national and international climate policy, international organizations, governments and feeding into the IPCC processes.
- Support senior researchers and consultants in delivering projects to clients.
- Conduct research and analysis to underpin project work.
- To conduct thorough research concerning the subject matter assigned by the relevant Unit Director, depending on business needs.
- To collect and organise the findings into graphs, diagrams or whatever else is required for project execution.
- Maintain a proactive, organized approach and ensure high-quality work.
- Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance skills and career growth.
Key competencies and experience
- Degree or higher in Engineering, Economics, Applied Mathematics, or a relevant field.
- Post-degree experience in developing quantitative tools and models in the field of energy and/or environmental economics.
- Proven programming skills in GAMS and/or Python/R is a plus.
- Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel and Word.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, collaborative attitude, and eagerness to learn.
