Researcher/Consultant - Transport

In this position the successful candidate will perform quantitative research and actively participate in modelling activities related to the energy system models PRIMES and PRIMES-TREMOVE.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, collect and process information from scientific, technical and market sources performing quantitative assessments including structuring, keep up-to-date and analysing large datasets relevant to energy, economy and transport.
  • Apply energy demand modelling of the transport sector while getting acquainted with the PRIMES modelling suite.
  • Analyse model outputs linking trends, impacts and causal relations to model mechanisms and communicate them in a clear and accurate manner.
  • Operate, maintain and further develop modules of our transport modelling tools in line with our standards and modelling protocols.
  • Understand transport system operation and translate this into modelling mechanisms able to capture the impact of transport sustainability policies, measures and interventions.
  • Support innovation in the development and enhancement of our transport modelling tools, explore new concepts, methodologies, and approaches to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of our assessments.

Key Competencies and Experience

  • Hold an MSc and/or PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, computational modelling, operations research, mathematical economics, or physics.
  • Proven experience in energy systems modelling, mathematical programming, optimization, transport economics, and related quantitative methods.
  • Skilled in quantitative modelling, with experience developing models and scenarios, particularly related to transport systems or a specific transport mode (desirable).
  • Applied experience in using analytical and/or modelling tools, with programming knowledge in R, Visual Basic, Python, Matlab, C, or preferably GAMS.
  • Demonstrated ability to delivering high-quality results.
  • Strong writing skills, with experience in academic articles, technical reports, or policy reports in English (desirable).
  • Advanced MS Office skills, particularly in Excel.
  • Fluent in verbal and written communication in English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset, with a collaborative attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team to deliver high-quality work.
