Modular solutions for future propulsion systems is the theme for Ricardo at this year’s PMW. We will be showcasing a range of products and services which are designed to give our clients in the performance automotive and motorsport industries a cost-effective solution for the development of bespoke powertrain and driveline technologies which minimise compromise on packaging and performance.

As well as featuring engineering and manufacturing solutions for traditional ICE, electric, and fuel cell including battery, inverter, and motor technologies, we will also be launching Element, our new range of baseline transmission products designed to enable our clients to rapidly prototype high performance driveline solutions and then easily configure them to suit a wide variety of real-world applications. These lightweight units are ideal for direct integration into space constrained environments and are designed to help speed up product development of electrified portfolios.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powertrain Optimisation for Endurance Racing

Speaker: Dr Temoc Rodriguez, Global Technical Expert - Electronics

Abstract: The world of motorsports is actively looking at transitioning from fossil-fuel powered vehicles to zero-emissions vehicles. Hydrogen powered cars with both internal combustion engines and fuel cells have featured in trial races in various formats from single lap through to rally and endurance racing. The latter is especially attractive due to the complexities of powertrain optimisation and the need for hydrogen refuelling. Ricardo’s work in this area also indicates that the optimum power and energy configuration of a vehicle changes depending on the racing circuit. In this presentation we will discuss the challenges of designing and optimising the HFCS powertrain for endurance racing.

Here's a preview of what Ricardo is showcasing this year

Flexible Battery Module

Ricardo’s flexible battery module concept is designed to enable low-volume OEMs to create a cost-effective bespoke solution for their high-performance and specialised product portfolios.

The modular design is scalable and customisable to meet the requirements of vehicle platforms with complex performance, efficiency and packaging requirements.

Ricardo has also partnered with InoBat for stable supply of pouch cells with high specific energy and C rating for sustained high power output and fast charging capability.

Our modular solution is ideal for supercar, motorsport, performance motorcycle, marine and other equally demanding applications.

800V Traction Drive Inverter

Ricardo’s innovative Traction Drive Inverter Solutions deliver high power density and offer very high efficiency, which is ideally suited to a wide range of applications such as commercial, off-highway or marine use. Our solution utilises Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology and is capable of meeting ISO 16750-3 standards.

The inverter platform is scalable to meet customer needs, including voltage, power, cost and packaging requirements, including compliance with ISO 26262 and more. Ricardo's global inverter expertise and our pre-developed set of "solution blocks" is the catalyst for any inverter development.

We can offer this solution as a single output inverter for power levels up to 350kW and a dual output inverter for platforms with traction power levels in excess of 1MW.
