Corporate and product sustainability and decarbonisation expertise from Ricardo has enabled EDRA/GHIN, the global trade bodies for home improvement retailers, to develop and set Scope 3 carbon emissions reduction targets for the global home improvement retail sector.
Ricardo is proud to share that EDRA/GHIN, has announced that six of its leading members: Kingfisher (UK), OBI (Germany), Kesko (Finland) Wickes (UK), Maxeda DIY Group (Benelux) and Intergamma (Benelux) have become the first signatories to the seminal Global Scope 3 Decarbonisation Commitment.
The EDRA/GHIN Global Scope 3 Decarbonisation Commitment which was launched at 10th Global DIY-Summit in Rome, Italy on 12 June 2024, entails the setting of net zero decarbonisation targets within the next two years, aligned to the Paris Agreement, as well as collaborating with suppliers to set their own net zero decarbonisation targets within five years. Also at the summit EDRA/GHIN and Ricardo published their ground-breaking Strategy Document, with the aim of helping retailers on their Scope 3 reporting journey.
EDRA/GHIN General Secretary, John W. Herbert said: “To achieve our commitments and to deliver the actions within the Strategy & Roadmap, collaboration across our sector is essential. This includes our members, suppliers, government and customers. That is why, today, we are announcing a Call to Action for all stakeholders to get involved and support us in taking action together. Any interested members, suppliers, governments or stakeholders can reach out to scope3@edra-ghin.org.”
Thierry Garnier, President of EDRA/GHIN and Kingfisher CEO said: “Now is the time for action and I would encourage everyone in our industry to commit and get involved. By coming together to take on the critical Scope 3 challenge, we can forge a path towards a future that is low-emissions, positive for our businesses and our planet.”
Through this Commitment, Kingfisher, OBI, Kesko, Wickes, Maxeda DIY Group and Intergamma demonstrate their support of the core value that a climate-secure world goes hand-in-hand with successful business operations.
On the announcement of their Commitment, Intergamma’s CEO, Joost de Beijer, shared: “Intergamma is highly committed to sustainability and firmly believes in a joint approach to significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions. Collaborative efforts with suppliers and partners are essential to achieve our climate goals. As a responsible player in our industry, we strive to be at the forefront of these crucial efforts. This Call to Action is the starting signal to further increase our collective strength.”
David Wood, CEO, Wickes said: "We are in the critical decade where we must make real inroads to moving to a net zero future that is fair for everyone. Wickes has an important role to play in this and we have already made progress with our own SBTi-validated science-based targets. We’ll do it faster by working in collaboration with our peers and supply chain partners across the home improvement retail sector, and the EDRA/GHIN Scope 3 Initiative provides an excellent platform to be able to do this."
Guy Colleau, CEO Maxeda DIY Group, stated: "Maxeda DIY Group is proud to be at the forefront of this critical initiative. By underwriting the Global Scope 3 Decarbonisation Commitment, we reaffirm our dedication to sustainability, which is a key pillar of our strategy. This commitment underscores our belief that business success and environmental responsibility go hand in hand."
Kesko's President for Building and Technical Trade, Sami Kiiski, shared: "To truly make a difference and mitigate climate change, it is crucial to consider Scope 3 emissions in addition to Scope 1 and Scope 2 in our industry. We believe that collaboration among various stakeholders is key to success, and we consider it essential for the entire sector to engage more extensively in sustainability efforts alongside suppliers and customers."
In June 2023 EDRA/GHIN President, Thierry Garnier, and General Secretary, John W. Herbert, launched the EDRA/GHIN Scope 3 Initiative on stage at the Ninth Global DIY-Summit in Berlin. Later that year EDRA/GHIN announced that they would be partnering with Ricardo to help the industry on its journey to identify and reduce Scope 3 emissions.
The Scope 3 Strategy and Roadmap, launched at the Global DIY Summit in June 2024, details the key actions to drive the sector forward on the right path. The strategic recommendations within the Strategy provide a set of clear actions that will unite the sector and drive collaboration from across the value chain, including retailers, suppliers, and other stakeholders across the home improvement sector.
This is a Strategy developed by the sector to provide guidance for the sector. The aim with this document is to inspire and enable stakeholders from across global DIY/home improvement retail sector to take decarbonisation action through three key objectives:
- Develop clear and consistent emissions calculation methodologies
- Agree common accounting and reporting standards and reporting platforms
- Engage with suppliers to drive action and change across the supply chain
