Ricardo supported sHYpS project wins First Prize at the Waterborne Awards 2025

The EU Horizon’s Europe sHYps project has been awarded First Prize in the Innovation
Category at the prestigious 2025 Waterborne Awards. Powered with Ricardo technology, the
sHYps project seeks to support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry.

At the forefront of innovation, the project involves a consortium of 13 partners from across
Europe. As experts in hydrogen technology and integration, Ricardo’s role in the project has
included establishing the specification of the fuel cell, design, build and testing. The award
announcement comes on the heels of announcement that the fuel cell has achieved full
power of 393kw.

In addition, Ricardo has been tasked with designing of a 40-foot containerised multi-megawatt power plant that combines the outputs of multiple fuel cell modules, intended to be installed under-deck on passenger ships.

Andy Ennever, Ricardo Global Head of Fuel Cells, said, “We’re delighted that the sHYps
project has received this recognition by the Waterborne Awards. It is a testament to the hard
work by the teams across the consortium, and the expertise and dedication of the Ricardo
team members to support the transition toward zero-emission shipping.”

Organised by Waterborne TP, the bi-annual Waterborne Awards celebrate grounding
breaking advancement in waterborne transport.
