Doha Metro

Challenge

Doha Metro is a fully automated system consisting of 37 stations on three lines with a total length of 76km.  Mainly underground, it is part of a new integrated national rail network that includes high speed, freight and light rail routes that was targeted to be in operation ahead of the country’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup.

Approach

Appointed in 2012 as the Independent Safety Assessor, Ricardo’s teams helped ensure that the safety of passengers, operating staff and members of the public was fully accounted for during every stage of the system’s development. Specific attention was placed on ensuring coordination between contractors and the future operator.

Results

The first sections of the metro opened in 2019. With the three lines now operational it is regarded as one of the most technologically advanced systems built to date. Capable of speeds of 100km/h, it is also one of the fastest driverless systems in the world.

Our support and official documentation ensured that Qatar Rail was able to complete the approval process and commence passenger operation on the first three lines as planned.
