Authorisation Testing for the Stadler FLIRT3

Challenge

Stadler’s FLIRT3, a multiple unit trainset designed for intercity and regional services, was required to be tested for compliance with interoperability (TSIs) and Dutch national regulations (RIS) before it can be authorised to enter into passenger service.

The vehicle, which had been sold to a number of train operators in the Netherlands, including NS, was to be tested against the technical requirements for brakes and wheel slide protection, traction system, axle counters, train protection systems, detection quality, running dynamics and pantograph performance.

Approach

Ricardo's teams specified the required tests and devised a comprehensive programme covering every possible aspect required by the authorities.

With the programme prepared, we assisted in the organisation of the tests runs, providing experienced test leaders and measurement specialists on site to ensure the programme was delivered as efficiently and as safely as possible.

Having analysed the test results, we helped Stadler compile and share the findings in the appropriate formats as specified by the authorisation parties.

Results

Our close cooperation with the train operators ensured the test programmes were completed on time, despite inevitable changes to the plans, as well as the various logistical challenges that typically emerge during such exercises.

Completion of the test campaign resulted in the timely authorisation of the Stadler FLIRT3 train variants.
