Railway requirements and configuration management

Ensuring projects deliver on their promise

Requirements management is a proven process for ensuring the final deliverables of a major rail project meet the original goals and expectations of owners, sponsors and stakeholders.

Applicable across all phases of the project lifecycle, our expertise is used by clients to support the collation, analysis, verification and validation of requirements data, typically with the use of specialised requirements tools and databases developed by our own teams.

Configuration management applies similar techniques and tools to ensure the completed project or product continues to deliver against its original objectives, including the safe integration of future modifications or engineering changes.

How we can support you

In any significant rail project - whether developing software products, procuring rolling stock, or constructing an entirely new route – there will be a community of important stakeholders with their own assumptions and expectations of the project, many of which possess the power to exert their influence even after a product or systems has entered into operation.

To help control and manage these pressures we provide three core services:

  • Requirements development – establishing clarity on the functional requirements of the project from the very outset – i.e. what it is there to do. This involves requirements elicitation, documentation and validation.
  • Requirements management - this includes forward/backwards traceability - e.g. tracking requirements through the design, production, delivery and testing phases. It also prompts continual questioning of whether the original requirements remain fit for purpose as the project progresses.
  • Configuration management – introduces safeguards to ensure a project remains focused on its goals after it has entered in to service. It includes modification planning, versioning and the prioritisation of engineering changes.

Benefits of our services

  • Ownership and accountability – build and maintain a traceable record of submitted requirements and priorities from the stakeholder community.
  • Definitive clarity on what the supplier needs to deliver.
  • Prevention of 'scope creep' – as plans proceed, we can ensure the project remains focused on its original objectives and does not accepts modifications without full agreement and consensus.
  • Prioritising of change requests – our teams will ascertain the reasoning for requested changes and oversee their integration into current plans.
  • Transparency and communication – applying a fair and balanced approach to documenting / sharing the requirements capture process will promote trust amongst stakeholders.
