Supporting the transition to ‘EU Green Deal Ready’ products
CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS
A large cosmetics company wanted to understand the impact of emerging hazard classifications, particularly regarding persistence and mobility, on their product portfolio. Their concern was that, as substances with these properties become more heavily regulated, their ability to trade their products would be restricted. They needed to achieve a robust assessment strategy in line with the regulations and the chemistries of their substances, and use this to understand which products in their portfolio may be considered persistent and/or mobile, to effectively manage future regulatory activity.
RICARDO SOLUTION
Ricardo conducted an in-depth review of the company’s proposed assessment strategy, optimising it for regulatory compliance and best-practice, whilst considering the specific structures and properties of the in-scope substances. Ricardo worked with the company to initially map and group their substances into categories, based on their structures, properties, and transformation products, to streamline assessments and minimise the need for further data generation where appropriate. From these efforts, Ricardo evaluated existing substance data to conduct weight-of-evidence assessments of their likely persistent and mobile properties, highlighting any data gaps and/or low quality studies, and providing specific, tailored recommendations for new testing needs.
CUSTOMER BENEFIT
The customer now has a strong understanding of which of their substances and products may be subject to emerging regulatory activity, with evidence-based recommendations for data gap filling and a repeatable assessment scheme to apply to other substances. This has enabled them to strategise product development and marketing based on sound science and regulatory insights.
