Electromagnetic compatibility

The rail environment is comprised of subsystems with the potential to generate and/or be affected by electromagnetic disturbances, leading to reduced reliability and degraded safety performance.

Signalling and train control systems, rolling stock, radio networks and traction equipment, for example, are all susceptible to electromagnetic activity, whilst being significant sources of electromagnetic interference.

The safety critical nature of the signalling system makes this a particular problem for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), which our team has experience in solving, due to the wide range of knowledge both of EMC techniques and safety assurance.

Our industry-leading electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) experts work closely with network managers, maintenance teams and rail safety engineers to ensure emerging problems are identified, assets are protected, and mitigation measures are safely implemented.

How we can help you

Previous EMC assignments include:

  • Obtaining safety approval for the commissioning new rolling stock assets in an existing railway with legacy signalling systems.
  • Assessing compatibility between systems via analysis, calculation, modelling and testing.
  • Checking electromagnetic field levels for compliance with human exposure limits.
  • EMC hardening techniques.
  • RFI and EMF testing.
  • Assessing the impact of EMC requirements on equipment design and operation.
  • Preparing safety assurance strategies and plans to ensure systems are electromagnetically compatible in a safety-critical environment.
  • Rolling stock measurements for EMC compatibility studies.
