Ricardo supports BEML in next generation propulsion system

17 March 2025

Ricardo is supporting client BEML with the development and integration of its next generation propulsion system.

The 1,500hp engine offers greater operational efficiency, with superior high power to weight ratio and will be able to operate in extreme conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, high altitudes and desert environments.

Ricardo has already reached several milestones on the project, including first fire of the engine and is now undertaking testing activities alongside the BEML team in India. The project is a clean sheet engine design and development programme consisting of design, manufacturing, and testing of components and sub-systems, engine development testing, durability testing, powerpack integration and vehicle trials. Ricardo is responsible for the engine design and development, alongside BEML and their suppliers.

The project will utilise the domestic supply chain, in line with the Indian Government’s Make in India initiative that is seeking to transform the country into a global manufacturing and trade powerhouse, with expanding infrastructure, rising exports and new trade agreements.

Jason Oms-O’Donnell, Managing Director of Ricardo Automotive and Industrial said: “We’re delighted to be working with BEML on this significant project. The engine is one of the most advanced engines of its type globally and is a significant achievement to support localising most of the supplier base into India. This has been achieved through close collaborative with BEML, using Ricardo’s expertise and engineering strength in engine design and development, and the use of state-of-the-art analysis and simulation techniques, which allow us to virtually design and develop solutions prior to build.

Shri Shantanu Roy, CMD of BEML Ltd, added: “The indigenously designed and developed 1500 HP engine is a monumental step towards achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing, fully aligned with the Honourable Prime Minister’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. This breakthrough not only strengthens our nation’s technological capabilities but also reinforces India’s position on the global stage. We are pleased to collaborate with Ricardo, leveraging their expertise to successfully execute design, manufacturing, and testing of components and sub-systems, along with engine development, durability testing, powerpack integration, and vehicle trials."
