Rail operations energy efficiency

We help rail organisations gain control over their energy consumption and support them in introducing measures that deliver significant cost savings without impacting on service levels.

Our capabilities extend across:

• Reducing energy use
• Migrating to modern and efficient zero emission fleets
• Connecting to energy grids
• Developing energy efficient driving practices

Other projects our teams have supported include planning the fitment of onboard energy meters, energy loss investigations, and feasibility studies for introducing hydrogen, battery and/or charging technologies.

DriveSmart: Energy saving through optimised driving

DriveSmart is a unique, cost-effective approach to reducing traction energy costs by up to 25%.

Developed in partnership with The University of Birmingham Centre for Rail Research and Education (BCRRE), DriveSmart performs detailed route modelling analysis to identify optimum movement sequences - such as coasting points and cruising speeds - and shares the information to driver teams through bespoke training programmes.

The system has been installed on the Edinburgh Tram system since April 2018, reporting a 17% reduction of energy use along the sections where it is used during its first 12 months.

Reducing energy consumption

Our experts have developed robust methodologies for modelling interactions between rolling stock, infrastructure and control systems, enabling them to build accurate simulations of the operational characteristics of a route, taking into account the track profiles, traffic levels, the location of stations, bridges and tunnels, and the impacts of differing vehicle loads.

The analysis can be used to pinpoint where more efficient driving behaviours can reduce energy use, such as sections where coasting should be used or new speed limits applied.

Zero emission fleet procurement

The procurement of new rolling stock is the optimum moment to introduce zero emission fleets.  We help organisations start the process by undertaking detailed feasibility studies into all available options, utilising our global experience of solutions such as battery, hydrogen and hybrid technologies.

We will ensure all requirements are explored and captured before  producing detailed technical specifications in accordance with industry standards such as EN50591.
